The art of the growing-up montage

I saw War Horse this weekend with my sister and it was brilliant. And the one scene I couldn’t get out of my head, the scene that made me tear up out of happiness (sad tearing up came later), was the growing-up montage. In roughly five minutes, a foal (Joey, the main character of the play) goes from fearing his owner/rider (Albert) to loving him, they develop inside jokes and BAM suddenly, he becomes a full-sized horse.

In a strange way, it kinda reminded me of this heartbreaking scene from Toy Story II.

There’s a special art to telling such a sweeping narrative in such a tight space of time. Wondering if anyone can think of other good examples?
